The information here will give you an insight into what counselling involves.
Hopefully this will enable you to take the next steps in seeking some professional help and finding the right Counsellor to work with.

Are you finding the challenges of life difficult to cope with?
Are you feeling stressed or anxious?
Are you struggling with a relationship?
Would you like to talk to someone who will really listen to you?

Occasionally life events can overwhelm us and we can feel stuck or tangled up and unable to find a way forward and other times we just need someone who will really listen to us and treat us with respect. Our childhood relationships can also have an impact on our sense of self, relationships with other people and our sense of the world and our place in it. At these times talking to a professional can be helpful as it can take great courage to ask for help. The therapeutic relationship is different from other relationships because it is all about you.

Counselling is a talking therapy that engages a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to cope with emotional issues.

Counselling involves an initial assessment/contracted session, an agreed short course of sessions over a few weeks or months, or a longer course that lasts for several months or years. This can take place, face to face, in a group (family or couples) or online (Skype, Zoom).

It can take a number of sessions before you start to see progress, but you should gradually start to feel better with the help and support of your therapist.

At times I will endeavour to help you find resources within yourself, via reflections, open honest conversations, practical methods and psycho-education so you can work through what is troubling you – whether this is something present or in the past. Counselling can help you untangle grow, change and enable you to manage challenges in a constructive way. Whilst acknowledging the pain of your difficulties, my desire is to help you find a way to live your life with a very real hope for the future in a safe way.

I work with individuals and couples and my clinical experience includes but is not limited to:

Abuse                                                   Life Transitions

Anger                                                   Loss

Bullying                                                Relational difficulties

Stress                                                    Low self esteem

Anxiety                                                 Bereavement

Depression                                          Spirituality

I am delighted that you are considering whether counselling could help you as I feel it is vital that a trusting relationship is built up in therapy, one which is supportive, genuine, empathic and non- judgemental.
